the old farmhouse where
I live
The
house was built in 1864 during a time when the land was still
cultivated exclusively in cotton. It was built by the great-Grandfather
of the husband of Miss Price, my neighbor across the road.
Though Miss Price
is in her eighties I call her "Miss"; Its a
Georgian cultural/respect thing. Miss Price lived in the house without electricity or running
water for the first five
years of her marriage. Of course the house now has
electricity and running water, al hamdullilah, but its still
very much its original self; heavy on character, lean on
comfort. Miss Price likes to visit me when the garden
gets going each spring. She brings homemade pies to exchange for fresh vegetables.
I like that.
