Among
the Windhounds of the Azawakh Valley: A Visual Documentary Produced by the Association Burkinabe' Idi du Sahel (est. 1993),
@Dr. Lutz Vollweiler (2002)
Remarks: This 29 minute documentary film presents a cross section of encounters with Azawakh during the ninth ABIS expedition to the Sahel in January/February 2000. The route of the expedition led from Tin Akoff, Burkina Faso on to Gao and Kidal in Mali, then to Menaka and from there to the savannah region of the Azawakh Valley. On the one hand the film documents and further clarifies the common phenotypic characteristics of the race in its region of origin: the keeled underline, the open angulations of the extremities, the strong joints, the broad front, the substantive skull structure with a strong lower jaw, and the floating far-reaching movement; and on the other hand the typical variations in colors and markings. Scenes in the film show the meager life circumstances of the Azawakh, where a harsh environment selects only the fittest for survival. The film shows the Azawakh moving about with freedom and self-confidence within its own society and while unknown guests to the encampments receive quite the opposite reaction the Azawakh neither panic nor display any desire to attack.
